Arthur Wharton was probably the first black professional footballer.
He was born in 1865 in Gold Coast, now Ghana. He came to England when he was 19 and he wanted to be an athlete. But he is remembered as a footballer.
He started as an amateur goalie, but would sometimes be a winger.
He died in 1930 and was buried in an unmarked grave. After a campaign by Football Unites, Racism Divides, his grave was given a headstone in 1997.
