In 1894, Nettie Honeyball (not her real name!) wanted to start a women’s football team.
She advertised and 30 women replied, so the British Ladies’ Football Club was formed in 1895. The first match attracted 12,000 people. It then became a popular sport. Nettie Honeyball had played an important part in making women’s football a reality.
